What is the cheapest way to take a Tour of Israel?
My mother-in-laws biggest dream is to go to Israel either on a mission trip or a tour. She has always helped everyone out financially except for herself and now I want to be able to help her with this. It would be a dream come true but we don’t have much money. Any funding or fundraisers? Suggestions? If you were to meet her you would know right away that she is such a giving person.
work in a kibbutz. My cousin did this when she was in Israel and found that it was a great way to get to know the people while earning free board.

(Why Don’t You Take) The Other Side? $13.99 Given that he’s got an extensive background as a pianist in Germany’s rich jazz scene — having made a home in Munich after moving from his native Milan — Robert Di Gioia’s work as the virtually one-man-band behind (Why Don’t You Take) The Other Side? comes as something of a surprise. No doubt he’s had to gradually ease out of some of the most defining traits of his original craft throughout his tenure as Marsmobil; though it began as an amalgam of lounge jazz and electronica in 1999, it fully culminates here with a far-removed, fascinatingly wide-ranging set sporting an abundance of tributaries. This is a tour de force of immaculately mind-bending pastoral pop, with an arsenal of instruments at play and only one finger on the trigger. Early album highlight and single “Crazy Colored Lights” utilizes a neat little tactic of segmenting the words of the title in a fleeting vocal harmony, and cycling them repeatedly as an isolated sonic tidbit floating over the rest — the perfect sonic equivalent of a kaleidoscopic image that does much to set the stage for what follows. One of the album’s two guests also shows up on this track in the form of a spoken word interlude by an entity known as the Illusionists, a strangely riveting out-of-left-field segment on a song that has already done much to ingratiate itself. You could swear that Mark Everett of Eels makes an appearance on the equally strong “Moon of Dust,” but as it turns out the song is intended merely as an “homage to Eels,” and is actually that much more impressive for it. At 16 tracks it would be tempting to assume there’d be some filler here, but this masterwork simply unfolds with nary a dull or derivative moment. Pianos and keyboard-driven sounds are the most consistently featured sonic implement, but in many cases they are used to lay the groundwork or simply twinkle at the higher end of the spectrum while other instruments take the spotlight. Such is the case with the deftly executed “Lolly,” which… |

11/22/63: A Novel By Stephen King $35 ON NOVEMBER 22, 1963, THREE SHOTS RANG OUT IN DALLAS, PRESIDENT KENNEDY DIED, AND THE WORLD CHANGED. WHAT IF YOU COULD CHANGE IT BACK?
In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King—who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer—takes readers on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.
It begins with Jake Epping, a thirty-five-year-old English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching GED classes. He asks his students to write about an event that changed their lives, and one essay blows him away—a gruesome, harrowing story about the night more than fifty years ago when Harry Dunning’s father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a sledgehammer. Reading the essay is a watershed moment for Jake, his life—like Harry’s, like America’s in 1963—turning on a dime. Not much later his friend Al, who owns the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to the past, a particular day in 1958. And Al enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession—to prevent the Kennedy assassination.
So begins Jake’s new life as George Amberson, in a different world of Ike and JFK and Elvis, of big American cars and sock hops and cigarette smoke everywhere. From the dank little city of Derry, Maine (where there’s Dunning business to conduct), to the warmhearted small town of Jodie, Texas, where Jake falls dangerously in love, every turn is leading eventually, of course, to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and to Dallas, where the past becomes heart-stoppingly suspenseful, and where history might not be history anymore. Time-travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying. |

Chapters: Led Zeppelin North American Tour 1968-1969, Led Zeppelin Scandinavian Tour 1968, Led Zeppelin United Kingdom Tour 1968, Shades of Deep Purple Tour. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Poster for Led Zeppelin’s concerts at the Fillmore West , used to help promote its 1968/1969 tour of North America Led Zeppelin’s 1968/1969 tour of North America was the first concert tour of North America by the English rock band. The tour commenced on December 26, 1968 and concluded on February 15, 1969. The genesis of this tour was the cancellation of a concert tour by the Jeff Beck Group, which happened to be managed out of the same office as that occupied by Led Zeppelin’s manager Peter Grant. Grant contacted the promoters and convinced them to take on Led Zeppelin instead. To help publicise the band in America before the tour, Grant sent white label advance copies of the band’s debut album to key FM radio stations. The album itself was issued on January 17, mid-way though the tour. According to tour manager Richard Cole, the tour was underwitten by Grant, guitarist Jimmy Page, and bass player John Paul Jones, while singer Robert Plant and drummer John Bonham were paid a salary. For this stint of concerts, Led Zeppelin initially played as the support act for bands such as Vanilla Fudge and Iron Butterfly (both of which were also contracted to Atlantic Records) and Country Joe |

24 Super Hits $12.98 The problem with naming your compilation 24 Super Hits is that quibblers will be quick to note that quite a few of these tracks weren’t hits at all, while the pedants will point out that they at least weren’t hits for Delroy Wilson. “Stick by Me” was indeed a smash, but for John Holt; likewise, “Beat Down Babylon” was a cultural classic that smashed up the Jamaican chart for Junior Byles and, needless to say, “I’m Still Waiting” was a triumph for Bob Marley & the Wailers. But enough griping — the title may be somewhat inaccurate, but the two-dozen numbers within are of such high caliber that it’s petulant to complain. Take those covers: Wilson does them proud, and he does an equally fabulous job with American hits, from his soulful rendition of the Four Tops’ “It’s the Same Old Song” to his emotive take on Tyrone Evans’ “Can I Change My Mind,” his sublime version of the Isley Brothers’ “This Old Heart of Mine,” and his powerful take on the Beltones’ “No More Heartaches.” Then again, this album is filled with powerful numbers, whether written by others or Wilson himself. There are potent political numbers like “Better Must Come,” which the Jamaican People’s National Party rode to ballot victory in 1972, the driving “You Keep on Running,” the emotional tour de force “Here Come the Heartaches,” and the suave “Cool Operator” (the song that gave Wilson his nickname). They are smash hits, one and all, but gems that are just as brilliant can be found among the somewhat lesser-known numbers, like the stunning deep soul performance delivered on “Any Heart Can Be Broken”; the torn-to-shreds-by-love “I Can’t Explain”; the adamant “They Can’t Stop Me”; and “Everyone Must be Judge,” stuffed with Wilson’s cultural message. So, not all of Wilson’s hits by a long shot, but a superb collection of his ’70s work regardless. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, Rovi |
